Porirua Harbour Trust Website launched

The Porirua Harbour Trust which was specifically set up by the three councils and Ngati Toa to promote the sustainable management of the Porirua Harbour and its catchments has launched its new website.  https://poriruaharbourtrust.org.nz/                                                     

The website provides a stream of useful information about the Trust and includes catchment maps which will allow residents to identify where the storm water from their home or business goes to including which stream or lagoon the water goes through before it enters the Harbour.

 

The Chair of the Porirua Harbour Trust Grant Baker, in launching the website, noted that many residents are not aware of the water and sediments that enter the catchment and the harbour, nor the impact that storm water runoff has on the health of the harbour catchment.  He noted that many residents, especially in the upper reaches of the Porirua Stream, (Johnsonville, Newlands, Churton Park, Grenada) don’t realize that their storm water goes north via local streams and Porirua Stream into the Onepoto Arm of Porirua Harbour and not into Wellington Harbour.

 

He announced that the website identifies the main issues for the catchment and harbour, the work the Trust is involved with in ensuring that the local councils deliver of the Porirua Harbour Strategy and gives people the opportunity to register to be involved in upcoming clean-up and planting programmes.

 

The Trust has also started a “history of the harbour catchment” page on the website and is looking for contributions and input from residents who may have historical photos or interesting stories to tell of the numerous stream, lagoon, wetland and lake catchments within the harbour catchment.

 

Mr Baker confirmed that the Trust will be issuing a scorecard on the current state of each of the catchments and the harbour later this year and residents may be surprised at the results.
