Porirua Harbour Education Coordinator announced

Porirua Harbour Trust is pleased to have contracted Rebecca Logan as the Porirua Harbour Education Coordinator.  In her role, Rebecca will promote the new resource the trust has developed for teachers, help coordinate field trips and action projects, and provide professional development for teachers.  Rebecca  is currently on parental leave from teaching Science at Wellington East Girls College.

Wendy Barry, a trustee on the Porirua Harbour Trust, says that Rebecca’s passion, extensive curriculum knowledge, and experience in Environmental Education and action-based learning makes her ideal for the role.

First up on Rebecca’s to-do list is organising an all day workshop for teachers in the Porirua Harbour catchment.  Held on Tuesday 4th November, the workshop will introduce teachers to the new resource, and give examples of how they can implement programmes about the harbour and catchment in their school. The workshop will include a guided bus tour of the catchment featuring student-friendly sites that demonstrate the key issues for the harbour recovery: sedimentation, pollutants, and ecological restoration.

The Porirua Harbour Trust has welcomed funding from the Philipp Family Foundation Charitable Trust for the education programme to be run in schools within the Porirua Harbour catchment. The curriculum based resource for teachers utilises the “Living Waters” series of short documentaries produced by local filmmaker, Cheryl Cameron in 2012 for the Pauatahanui Inlet Community Trust.  

 Wendy says that the Porirua Harbour Trust expects to see an increase in children across the catchment being aware of harbour issues in the years ahead. Teachers interested in attending the workshop can contact Rebecca on pht.education@gmail.com
